How much can passive thermal improvements save?

“Passive thermal performance” means improvements to the building envelope: insulation, sealing leaks around doors/windows, better glazing, reducing thermal bridging, etc. These improvements reduce heating/cooling loads, which often are large parts of energy bills.
Here are what studies and guidelines suggest:

According to NABERS (Australia’s building rating scheme), office buildings rated on energy performance have seen on average ~42% energy savings over time through improving efficiency and envelope performance.

Studies elsewhere suggest that up to 40-60% of energy consumed by building services (heating, cooling, ventilation) may be lost via leaks, poorly insulated walls/roofs, and inefficient windows. By improving envelope performance, a large part of that can be reclaimed. (Walls, roof, windows, doors are key.)
